My husband and I have been helping my brother prep his home for move-in. We’ve had a lot of busy weekends full of carpentry work and DIYs, but that’s just how we like it and the house is looking absolutely incredible so far. The next project on our list is to replace the wood baseboards throughout his home. They’re a little dated and might have a bit of water damage. We started our project last weekend when we chose between MDF or wood baseboards. And honestly, before this project I had never even considered the difference between the two! Choosing the correct kind of baseboards is a crucial part of your home design, so use these tips to tell the difference between MDF and wood baseboards. You’ll never forget the difference again!

MDF Baseboards

These baseboards are always sold painted and prime, limiting your ability to work with natural wood grains in your baseboard.

They are great for areas of high traffic, they damage easily. MDF should always be coated in a tough transparent top layer to keep damage at bay. However, when done right, can look great for years to come.

-Because they’re man-made, MDF baseboards are all perfectly straight (or, at least they should be!) You never have to worry about your wood bowing.

These baseboards are a lot less expensive than wood baseboards. They’re a great solution for DIYers on a budget!

-Unlike wooden baseboards, MDF never splits or is damaged when nailing them to the wall.

Wood Baseboards

-These don’t come painted or primed, leaving you to work with the natural wood. Do with it what you would like!

-Wood baseboards of all kinds are usually sturdier than MDF baseboards. Even soft wood is super durable.

-Unfortunately, wood baseboards can split when being nailed to the wall. Use the correct tools to ensure that things are installed with the utmost care.
