It’s a great DIY project that anyone can take on. It’s worth doing because it will save money on home heating and cooling costs. Keep reading to see how to insulate garage doors.
First of all, know the size of your garage door. A standard garage door insulation kit is for a 9-foot door, and the supplied panels can then be cut to fit your garage door panels. Panels are not uniform. Some door designs utilize short panels and some have longer ones. Also, panels on the same door can vary slightly from panel to panel, so measure each one to get an exact fit.
A lightweight saw is perfect for cutting the insulation panels. You could also use a sharp utility knife.
Within a garage door insulation kit there is reflective insulation and foam panels. The best way to install the insulation is to cut and fit the reflective insulation first, and then cut and add the foam panels.
The foam panels slip into the channels on the inside of your garage door and once installed, they hold the reflective insulation in place. Be careful not to trim the foam panels too much. The panels need to entirely fill each panel of your garage door for best results.
Extremely important: you may need to have an expert come and adjust the tension of the spring on your garage door after the insulation is installed. The reason is because the insulation adds extra weight that can cause the spring and motor to work harder. If the spring tension needs to be adjusted, that’s a job best left to the experts.
