When was the last time I used this?
A lot of times we keep things that we have had for way too long. Clothes that just sit inside of our closets (that haven’t been worn in ages), items we think we will use one day but actually haven’t been touched in years, and sentimental value items we feel obligated to keep but never use. When trying to declutter, it’s important to ask ourselves, “When was the last time I used this?” because the answer to that question might give us an obvious answer that we need to get rid of it.
Does it bring me joy?
Look at each item in your home and think about if it brings you joy. As interesting as it may sound, this method works great because it will help you realize how many things you have that don’t hold much value. Joy is an important component to maintain in our homes. Not only will you will be able to quickly declutter, but having a neat and tidy home will also bring you much more joy than having a house filled with items you don’t need.
Should it be replaced?
Sometimes we get into the habit of keeping things that really should be replaced. Some items start to accumulate wear and tear after getting old or overused. When you throw out these things in your living space, and give it some time, you might realize that you didn’t even need it in the first place. If time has passed, and you realize you need it, it’s best to replace it with a new item rather than one that is old and worn down.
Do I love it?
Ask yourself, “Do I love this?” when trying to declutter. Holding on to things we don’t love can be detrimental to our efforts in trying to have a clean and simple lifestyle. When you start to develop the mentality of only having things you love, it will help you not only declutter but also help you avoid buying things you will want to get rid of again in the future.
Do I have similar items that serve the same purpose?
If you find yourself trying to declutter, and you come across items that are the same, get rid of or donate the items you like the least. If there isn’t a need for 500 pens in your desk, 22 decorative pillows you think you will use “one day”, or anything else that you carry multiples of, then it’s time to cut back. This is a quick way to eliminate many items in your home that you can easily do without.
