There’s something about a tall ceiling that just makes your home LOOK gigantic, airy, and open. Unfortunately for some of us (myself included), our homes weren’t built to support high ceilings! Instead of going through a pricey remodel of your home to create vaulted ceilings of your own, these tips will help you fake the look of high ceilings instead! Let’s get started!
1. Uncover The Ceiling’s Hidden Architectural Elements
The easiest way to make your low ceiling appear much, much higher is to uncover whatever elements lay UNDERNEATH those ceiling tiles Remove the drywall, sheetrock, and whatever else you have up there to reveal whatever is underneath. They may be wooden beams or even industrial piping!
2. Use Recessed Lighting
I’m not sure what exactly it is, but recessed lighting has a great way of making ANY room look better! Using recessed lighting instead of a light fixture will help draw the attention away from your ceiling. Plus, your ceilings will look MUCH taller without anything hanging from them!
3. Ditch The Crown Molding
Contrary to what you’ve been previously told, crown molding doesn’t make your ceilings look taller, they make them look smaller, instead! If you opt to use crown molding in your home, use a thinner variety of crown molding. Additionally, many interior designers will recommend that you paint the molding the same color as your ceiling.
4. Paint Your Ceiling White (If It’s Not Already)
It’s no secret that white makes a room look miles bigger when decorating, so don’t be afraid to utilize it on your ceiling! Painting your ceiling white can make any space look tons larger than it really is. Now, you’ll just need the right tools for the project!
5. Choose Low-To-The-Ground Furniture
This is a trick you’ll never forget! To make your ceilings look much higher than they really are, choose low-to-the-ground furniture. It creates the optical illusion of a much larger space.
6. Raise Your Window Treatments
Instead of hanging your window treatments even with the window frame, hang them just a few inches higher. This simple trick helps to draw eyes upward, creating a taller-looking space.
7. Hang Vertical Mirrors
Hanging vertical mirrors strategically throughout your space is a surefire way to make your home look larger–in more ways than one! The mirrors will create an illusion of more vertical AND horizontal space. What a win-win!
