It’s that time of year in my neck of the woods! So many of my neighbors are reporting problems with mice in their homes! We’ve also had a lot of construction in the neighborhood, so all of the mice are also being driven out of the empty lots and into everyone’s homes!
If only they had known that there was a trick to easily (and safely) repel mice from your home. If you too are struggling with a mouse problem, I have a few mouse repellent DIY ideas to share. In my experience, they really do work!
Mouse Repellent Essential Oils
Not only are essential oils good at relieving a nasty stomach ache or smell, but they are pretty good at repelling mice and insects, too. Because the smell of these oils are too strong for mice, they won’t want to get near it. In my experience, peppermint oil works best when repelling mice. Peppermint inhibits the pheromone trails mice use for location, so they turn around. It works on spiders, too!
However, if you want to make your own mouse repellent with peppermint oils, there are a few things to keep in mind! I’ll share everything you need to know about mouse repellent essential oils.
Though you can create your own DIY spray (I’ll explain how to do so at the end of the post) I recommend using oil-soaked cotton balls as kind of a “force field.” Simply soak cotton balls in a few drops of essential oil and use them to create a barrier around their entry point. However, this method does not provide permanent repellent. Reapply the oils every few days to really keep the mice away from your home.
Additionally, tea tree, lavender, and eucalyptus oils can all be used in the same manner (with soaked cotton balls) to repel mice.
Mouse Repellent DIY Spray
After you have blocked off their entrance with essential oil-soaked cotton balls, I recommend making your own DIY mouse repellent spray. Apply this directly wherever you think you might have mice.
To make, combine two tablespoons of peppermint oil (or lavender, tea tree, and eucalyptus, whichever you find works better) with one cup of water. Add a few squirts of Dawn dish soap as well, for good measure. Shake it well and apply where ever you think is necessary.
