I love repurposing old junk and turning trash into treasure. Recently I came across a photo of an old door that had been revamped and turned into something awesome. Turns out, there’s lots of things you can make out of cool vintage doors. Check out this list of old door ideas to get your creativity flowing!
Old Door Ideas
Rustic Sliding Door
Install sliding doors for a unique entryway. Love the rustic look of this! You’ll need to have access to a handyman (or be one) for this project! Idea found on Bright Bold & Beautiful
Chalkboard Desk
Paint the panels with chalkboard paint and add drawers and some hooks to turn an old door into a super cute AND functional piece of furniture! Another great idea from Bright Bold & Beautiful.
Coat Rack
Mount a vintage door sideways, add hooks and maybe even a shelf to transform it into a great coat rack and display area! I found this idea on Home Talk.
Chalkboard Calendar
Another one mounted sideways—after a little bit of chalkboard paint, this one could be used as a weekly organizer or meal planner. Idea found on Pinterest.
Porch Swing
An old door can make for a perfect backrest on your rustic porch swing! Found on Pinterest.
Book Shelf
What a great way to store all your favorite books! Makes me want to say something cheesy like, “Open the door to a whole new world by reading…” Ha ha. Feel free to laugh at my cheesiness. This great idea I found on Indulgy.
Vintage Door Garden Decor and Planter
Don’t have planters on your windows? No worries… you can make your own! Great way to spice up your yard, especially with the bright colored door! Too cute! I found this one on Hometalk.
Old Door Turned Coffee Table
I would probably take the knob off, more for convenience, but I love the green paint for a nice “pop”! Idea from Dish Comfortable Designs.
Garden Gate
Double vintage doors serve as a garden gate. Makes it seem magical, doesn’t it? Another Passenger shared this idea with us.
What else can you do with an old door? Thanks for reading!
please be aware of the dangers of lead-based paint especially if the door predates 1978.
Good point C. Terry Ross! There are simple kits you can pick up at big box stores to test the paint for lead. If there is lead it’s best to leave the finish as is and seal it up really well with Never Peel or a similar finish.
THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP.
Everyone take heed.
Next time I spot an old door at a yard sale, I’m grabbing it! Great ideas!
Just found 4 on side of road
Thank you for these. I used a found door as the headboard for my bed!
I love these new ideas !! I have also seen another great ideal for old doors. It was on one of those diy shows. It came from an original door in an older home they had purchased to bring life back into it. It was a large door, and a large family ! They cleaned it up & stained it & made a beautiful & plentiful dining table !! It worked beautifully for the family of twelve !! They kept the house historical, but did open it up a little & repurposed everything that someone else may have other wised throw out. That home turned out so beautiful! !!
Does anyone have the directions on how to build this? I am wondering how they supported it from behind. Thank you.
I love the door swing on the picture. It would look awesome on my covered porch. I can’t find the directions to build it though.
I wish I could find it! I just love the idea and I saw it on Pinterest. I’m sorry
Thank you for the extra ideas! I just made a game room table using epoxy on top so was super smooth for playing poker!
I have been saving an old door from a Tudor house built in1920 in my garage . I just couldn’t part with it and now I have some great ideas
