There are a lot of different types of glues, and many of them claim to work well for gluing wood. But for the best results on any wood project, be sure that you use plain wood glue. It doesn’t need to be fancy, it just needs to be made specially for wood. Wood glue contains fibers that are intended to penetrate the wood and produce a good, strong bond that lasts.

If you’ve got an old bottle of wood glue, don’t automatically throw it out assuming it’s bad. Check its viscosity, and if it is still free flowing {not clumpy} then it is probably fine to use.

For any outdoor wood project, make sure you buy a wood glue that says it is waterproof. Water resistant won’t even do the job here–buy only “waterproof” wood glue!

Before staining your project, protect the joints that you’ll be gluing by masking them off with painter’s tape. This is because a stain-free wood surface takes glue and bonds better than a finished wood surface.

Buy your next wood glue application brush from the plumbing department! A flux brush is a great tool to spread the glue onto your wood surface.

When gluing two wood joints together, apply glue to one and then rub the two together before clamping them into securely into place. Rubbing helps spread the glue more thoroughly.

When you have excess glue squeeze out between wood joints, the easier way to remove it is to allow it to gel up and then use a chisel to scrape it away.
