How To Change Windshield Wiper Blades

Just last weekend we taught my oldest driver the basics of the road and she’s been obsessed with driving wherever she can since then! While I’m a little terrified that my baby is out on the road, I feel a little bit better knowing that my husband and I taught her everything she needs to know, including basic car maintenance! We firmly believe that while they may not think they need it now, everyone needs to learn how to do a little car maintenance at some point in life. This is exactly why we taught my oldest how to change her windshield wipers, check the oil, and change a flat. These are necessary skills to have, or at least I think so anyway. And guess what? She came home the other day with a new set of wiper blades and managed to put them on herself. I’ve never been so proud! Here’s how my daughter changed her wiper blades so you can too!

Step One: Before you begin, measure your existing windshield wiper blades so you know what size to buy for your new pair. You can usually find the length of your wiper blades in your owners manual, as well. As soon as you’ve confirmed that you have the correct size, you can move on to the next step.

Step Two: To remove the existing wiper blades, lift the wiper blade off of the windshield. Press the small tab on the underside of the wiper blades and remove the blades by pulling downwards. Simple enough, right? Repeat on the other side, and in your back window if you have a wiper back there!

Step Three: Attach your new set of windshield wiper blades by pulling the wiper blade tightly onto the arm. You will hear an audible “click” when the new blade snaps into the arm. Again, repeat this process on the other side.

Step Four: Now, hop in your car and test to make sure everything is working correctly.
