About Us

Welcome to How to Build It!  We are a husband and wife team that likes to design and build fun things to make our house a home.

Meet Carl and Jennifer, house remodel extraordinaires.  We also have some really fabulous contributors that help make this blog what it is today.

Carl and Jennifer at How to Build It

I am a happy wife and mom to 5 wonderful kiddies.  Life is chaotic, but beautiful.  In my *spare* time, I love to redecorate, or remodel sections of our home, or put in new landscape features and designs.  Together we make the perfect team.  Carl is a very talented and semi-professional woodworker and home improvement/DIY-er. He has years of experience working in professional cabinet shops, where he learned the very finest finishes and techniques to build high-end furniture and cabinets.

We will be posting tutorials on building furniture, refinishing furniture, DIY projects, and home and yard improvements.  We are also working on revamping the site to make it the very best it can be and more functional for our readers, so please be patient as we make those changes.

That is definitely in the plan, just trying to get the site off the ground. Thanks for reading. I will email you as soon as I have added that feature, it shouldn’t be too long.

I love your site! I didn’t know you could put a heater in the floor. I would love this in my bathroom but am worried about being zapped. Is this safe in there?

I just discovered your website when I signed onto Pinterest after a long absence due to a surgery & recovery. Your 20 insanely simple/clever updates was listed in Pins I might like. Pinterest was wrong-didn’t like it-I LOVED YOUR SITE AND I’VE JUST STARTED TO EXPLORE. I too have a carpenter in my life. My son-in-law is self taught but clearly a savant…he can build almost anything. Also, my daughter has started refinishing/refurbishing furniture mostly using milk paint and her stuff is so amazing when she began posting some before & afters on Facebook, she started getting unsolicited offers for WAY MORE than she had planned on charging on Kijiji…so we are definitely kindred spirits. I am a Marketing Director and have told her she needs a site or a blog when she has more than 10 pieces and must take lots of pics before and after and during. Also said she should keep, track of how to, any special tips etc. for blog or site. If you have the time I’d love you to e-mail me and tell me-did you start with the Blog or site. You are clearly years ahead of her and have some great advertisers, followers, etc. & you mention that you have “lots of contributors”. First we are Canadian, but I’d guess you have Canadian followers given your Pinterest presence. If she sent you pics of her furniture projects (before & after-she is starting to take pictures “during” with her next makeover a per my advice, but now just has the B&A’s) just so she could do a “focus group” with your readers re: rating of work, would they buy or just do they like what she has done-or whatever you would allow-or advise. Obviously you’d have to agree her stuff is up to,your level & your contributor’so level but Feedback from your huge audience would be invaluable for planning the blog or site. Would you ever consider that? Also, I am still exploring your site so I’m not sure if you sell any items, as her goal is to eventually find, re-do and sell and also provide the how to’s etc like you do. Would love to,hear from you, if you have time. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE YOUR SITE & thanks for showing such great work, DIY’s and a well designed, easy to navigate space. An admirer in Canada and will be pinning like mad today LOL….best of luck to you going forward. Shirley
