Step 1:

If the brick is outside, you can safely use a power washer to clean the surface and remove all dirt and debris. If the brick is indoors, use some soap and water and a bristled brush to thoroughly clean the brick. For tough-to-clean areas, use a no-suds trisodium phosphate (TSP). Be sure to use gloves and safety goggles if using TSP. After cleaning, rinse the brick thoroughly and then allow plenty of time to dry.

Step 2:

Once the brick and mortar between are completely dry, you need to prime the surface for paint. For all applications, an oil-based primer provides the best protection against stains, including soot stains. Apply primer to the entire surface, and don’t forget the mortar between the bricks. Wait for the primer to thoroughly dry before proceeding with paint.

Step 3:

Time for the real fun! For outdoor applications, choose an exterior latex. For an indoor wall, an interior latex in your choice of satin, semi-gloss or gloss finish is perfect. If you are painting a fireplace, be sure to use an interior latex paint that is rated for high-temperature use. To apply the paint to the brick, use either a roller with a low-nap, or one that is specifically for textured surfaces. This will give you the best results on the uneven surface of brick. Apply two or three coats of paint to the brick and to the mortar in between the bricks, allowing some drying time between coats–just follow the manufacturer’s directions on the paint can.

Enjoy your beautiful “new” brick!
